Google's fall detection on Pixel phones and Apple Watch's version get the press, but any Android phone can detect falls — no wearable required. Here's how it works and how to set it up for free.

How fall detection works on a phone

The accelerometer in your phone measures acceleration in three axes 100+ times per second. A fall has a distinctive signature: rapid downward acceleration → brief near-zero gravity → sudden impact spike → sustained stillness. EchoCircle's fall detector watches for this pattern and triggers an alarm countdown.

The countdown: how it prevents false alarms

After detecting a fall pattern, the app waits (you set the delay: 5–30 seconds) and shows a cancel screen. If you're fine, you dismiss it. If you're unconscious or unable to cancel, the alarm fires automatically. This two-step design prevents accidental alerts from jumping, running, or dropping the phone.

Who benefits most

  • Elderly living alone — most common use case
  • People with epilepsy or conditions causing sudden loss of consciousness
  • Solo cyclists, skiers, and snowboarders
  • Construction workers and people working at height
  • Night runners and solo hikers

Phone placement matters

Fall detection works best when the phone is in a trouser pocket or shirt pocket — not in a bag or on a desk. The phone needs to experience the same acceleration as your body. A phone left on a table won't detect you falling in the next room.

Setup in EchoCircle

Go to Triggers → Fall Detector → Enable. Choose sensitivity (medium is recommended to start) and the delay before the alarm fires. Add at least two people to your trusted circle so if one doesn't respond, another will.
